Film Project
Filmmaking is a miracle of collaboration – James McAvoy
Subject Overview
One of the most successful elements of the film studies course is the ‘film project.’ The various film projects we have completed with our students have only been feasible with a specific amount of time (a minimum of 10 months–12 months is ideal), particular resources and grant money. It is an expensive and heavy-laden exercise. A substantial amount of probono will be required to bring a film project together. However, it is very worthwhile and you will observe significant growth in the lives of your students.
Duration
Over ideally 4 x 10 week terms, (no less than three), students are taken through four subjects of study which are dependent on what type of film project you will make (see ‘How is it structured?’ for more insight).
The subjects of study are modified to support the class working towards creating a professional short film over the duration of the four terms, and I highlight ‘professional’ because the project aims to give students the experience of working on a professional film and the opportunity to engage in work experience with professional mentors from the film industry.
The subjects of study through which the film is developed include;
- Mise-en-scene & Symbolism in film
- Directing actors
- Film pre-production & production
- Post Production
Aims
- Students work collaboratively with their peers and mentors to create a short film
- Develop and demonstrate further work-readiness skills through engaging in collaboration and teamwork.
- Develop and demonstrate a basic understanding of the overall filmmaking process from development, pre-production, production and post production.
- Develop endurance and capacity through a long term project commitment.
