Scriptwriting: The Hero’s Journey- Structure for Feature Films

Subject Overview

Students will be introduced to ‘the hero’s journey’- a popular structure for feature films. They will discover character archetypes, as well as all the stages of the hero’s journey, and will be asked to identify these stages in feature films with a particular focus on identifying the ‘ordinary world’, ‘special world’, ‘call to adventure’, ‘refusal of the call,’ ‘resurrection’ and ‘elixir’. Students will explore three different types of heroes and compare the differences between heroes to identify traits that classify them as ‘willing hero’, ‘anti-hero’ or ‘tragic hero’.
